Idioms

Idioms are linguistic expressions which are typical for a language and which often cannot be translated literally into a different language.

Since idioms cannot be translated literally, they pose a challenge to any translation program. Translate is able to translate many idioms fully automatically. So e.g. John kicked the bucket. becomes John biss ins Gras. in German, and It was raining cats and dogs. becomes Es goss in Strömen.

Unfortunately, it does not always work. Therefore Translate pro features a comprehensive dictionary of idioms with som 35,000 idioms

Just cklick on the idioms symbol, and candidates for idioms for the current sentence and their translations are presented. It does not matter whether the cursor is in the source or target text. If a single word was selected, all idioms are displayed in which the word occurs. Often examples of use are shown which illustrate how the idiom is used.

The automatic detection of idioms in Translate pro is very useful, since you find even those idioms which cannot be adequately translated, and you may be able to insert the correct translation anyway.
