The translation memory component

comparing text with the translation memory

A translation memory (or sentence archive) is a database which contains pairs of sentences or smaller segments of text. Translation memory systems are established in professional translation, since they stand for an immense increase in productivity in many translation projects.

At first sight it may sound paradox to couple a translation memory with a translation program, since you can have the a text translated any time. But since automatic translation is not perfect and postediting usually is required, why should one not want to reuse the results again for other texts?

take sentences from translation memory

By integrating the translation memory component with automatic translation you get the option to only translate those sentences automatically which have not been translated earlier. And for sentences which are similar to one already translated, you can compare which translation may be the most appropriate one. (Click on the image to see it in full)

Translation memories can be searched for specific words which occur in the sentence pairs stored. So you can find suitable contexts for the usage of words. An example for this you find on the page Common phrases.

Instead of working with words you can also use so-called attributes which can be created for each sentence pair. More...

There is a TMX converter, which you can use to exchange translation memories with other translation memory systems such as Trados®.
